Job Description

The Japanese Association of University Women (JAUW) offers an exceptional fellowship program for international women holding a master’s degree or higher. This initiative supports women conducting short-term research in Japan, allowing them to reside at a university or research institute for 4–6 months.

Launched in 1987, the JAUW fellowship aims to elevate the status of women and girls, foster lifelong learning, equip women graduates to make a meaningful societal impact, promote higher education, and advance gender equality. The fellowship provides financial assistance to help cover living and travel expenses, encouraging women from around the world to pursue research opportunities in Japan.

Fellowship Benefits

Successful candidates will receive a financial award ranging from 600,000 to 900,000 Yen, intended to cover living expenses and travel costs.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be under 45 years of age as of March 31, 2025.
  2. Reside outside of Japan at the time of application.
  3. Hold a master’s degree or higher.
  4. Secure acceptance from a university or research institution in Japan where they plan to conduct their research.
  5. Submit a clear description of how they will use the fellowship funds.
  6. Understand that the fellowship is non-extendable.
  7. Complete a financial aid questionnaire as part of the application process.

Fellows’ Responsibilities

Selected fellows must:

  1. Arrange their accommodations in Japan with guidance from their host supervisor.
  2. Engage fully in the proposed research during the fellowship period.
  3. Submit a 500–700-word written summary report of their research upon completion of the fellowship.
  4. Present their findings in an oral presentation at a JAUW meeting toward the end of the program.
  5. Acknowledge JAUW’s support when publishing research outcomes derived from this fellowship.
  6. Obtain written approval from the JAUW President for any significant changes to the proposed schedule.
