- The scholarship fully waives entrance examination fees, matriculation fees, and tuition costs throughout the study period.
- Travel Expenses
- To Japan: Economy-class airfare is provided from the international airport nearest to the scholar’s residence.
- From Japan: Economy-class airfare is covered for scholars returning home after completing their studies.
- Preparatory Education
- A six-month Japanese language and culture training program is available for scholars who require additional language proficiency before starting their degree program.

Eligibility Requirements
The MEXT Scholarship is open to applicants from all nationalities, provided they meet the following criteria:
- Nationality: Must be a citizen of a country maintaining diplomatic relations with Japan.
- Age Requirement: Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1990, except in cases involving military service obligations or other specified reasons.
- Academic Background:
- For master’s programs: Completion of at least 16 years of formal education.
- For doctoral programs: Possession of a master’s degree or equivalent research experience.
- Field of Study: The chosen field must align with the applicant’s prior academic qualifications and be available at Japanese universities.
- Health: Submission of a valid medical certificate confirming fitness for studying abroad is required.
- Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate the ability to study and conduct research in Japanese or English and should show a willingness to learn Japanese if required.
Application Process
The application process consists of several stages, starting from April to May 2025 (exact dates vary by country). The following outlines the steps involved:
- Initial Application
- Applicants must contact their local Japanese embassy or consulate to submit required documents and confirm specific deadlines.
- First Screening
- Conducted by Japanese embassies and consulates from May to July 2025.

- Provisional Acceptance

- Final Screening
